This game is sick and harmful
We already live in a decadent world, but this game can make society even worse. Not only is it written and drawn by people with spiritual and philosophical problems (who surely enjoy hurting themselves and playing sadomasochistic games) but it can also harm immature minds (even if they are of age) or those who have a mental illness (depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, etc.).

If you are sad or see no meaning in life, do not sink further into the mud with forms of entertainment like this. Do not act like emos or goths. Read the stoics, profess a religion of salvation, go to a psychologist, do good works to improve the world, learn, laugh... But do not lock yourselves in a basement playing things like this. They will sink you further into despair and who knows what you will do. You can contract mental or spiritual illnesses.

Life is good. Reject the henchmen of evil like these two.

I hate that type of fanart too. It made me really miserable when I was younger. It made me stop liking comics and animation.

I haven't played Slay the princess, but I've seen a couple of gameplays because this game is everywhere on the internet. If there is something that I liked in this game, it is only that a chained girl appears (although she is not chained for long). But you only need to see 5 minutes of the game to know that games like this or Helltaker, or animation like Helluva boss, are really pernicious. But for some reason they are very popular.

If you haven't played it, what exactly do you expect the outcome to be of coming onto the game's forums and telling everyone here, who either already has played it or is heavily considering doing so, that they are all spiritually diseased wretches?

I also don't really know what exactly you think is "pernicious" about it considering that to you, the best possible part of the game is the fact that there is a girl chained in a basement. Doesn't really strike me as an ideal state, y'know?

If sadomasochism (or "five minutes" and a "chained girl") is all you can see, then your perspective is woefully, horrendously incomplete:
"Whatever horrors you find in these spaces, have heart and see them through." This is told to you from the get-go, dive deep and be curious, the end is not so bleak. There is no small amount of hope, witty humor, and some lovingkindness along the way too.
Given how philosophical the game can get at points, one has to wonder, what specific "philosophical problems" are you referring to in the writers of this game you haven't played?

If you're just a troll, then congratulations, you got something out of me.

True, but if I was asking someone like OP who decries sadomasochism, I'd expect them to be upset about the scenario.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I'm sure there are many like you that don't like this game. That's good! Thank you for coming forward and sharing your perspective. However, I would say calling the creators of this game evil and making assumptions about their spiritual orientation and mental state is going too far. Just because you don't agree, understand, or resonate with this story doesn't mean it is antagonistic to you. It can be unnerving when so many people have such an antithetical view to you, but that doesn't mean either of you are wrong.

If you were concerned about the content of this game being disturbing to some viewers (including children) there is a warning on the store page, as well as when you start the game. If you feel like there should be more of a warning then it would be better for the people you are trying to protect if you focus on this, rather than the creators.

Slay The Princess is an incredible story that reflects life and the human journey itself.

The first 5 acts always end in pain, loss, or regret.
But it was all worth it, because you choose how the final act ends.

You can buy this masterpiece here:

idk why we dragged politics into this bizarre take on a fantastic game. But if you read the full comment, this user dropped the phrase "spiritual sickness" twice when bashing the work because it goes into dark, theological topics and insist that this kind of exploration is "evil."
Also, last I checked, goth and emo (the movements this user brought up and doesn't want people to interact with for some reason) are more on the lax side of the political spectrum at their cores.
This isn't some random liberal that wants censorship because of potential hurt feelings, this is most likely a bible-thumping conservative that thinks this game spreads and encourages evil thoughts against faithful teachings. They literally say to "profess religion or salvation" instead of playing this "evil" game. It's a pretty on-the-nose example of a hyper conservative argument against something. It's also pretty reminiscent of those who keep ranting on how Halloween is the bane of all existence.
Side note, the helluva franchise(s) are super fun. Our overthinking commenter would probably think otherwise.

I was going to comment "obligatory 'bait used to be believable' comment" but seeing just how many people believe this has got me second-guessing myself

but then again, that's the illusory truth effect at its finest. I mean cmon, it opens with a variation of the "videogames cause violence" sentiment which was proven false a long time ago.

either way, i'll treat this post seriously for the rest of this comment

No, this game can not make society worse. The only way for a game to be harmful is for it to be presented to the wrong audience, being in this case kids who aren't old/mature enough to be presented with graphic content on this level.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however, slander of an artist is NOT an opinion. If you want to criticize a work of art, you must be able to restrain yourself from going for cheap shots at the artist. Otherwise, you lose all weight as a critic.

That being said, are you happy like this? Do you genuinely find enjoyment in making these posts? For one talking so much about mental stability, seeking attention by trashing on something directly where people enjoy it most is not something that gives a good impression about you as a person.

This isn't the steam reviews. People don't go to the discussions page to get informed on whether or not they interact with a game. You're lying to yourself if you think this post does anything more than minorly annoy some people, because everyone seeing this post loves the game. You can do better than this.

You see, the crying about helluva boss kinda debunks the whole being leftist since a ton of wokie types tend to love helluva boss (cause shipping and LGBT characters). Plus a lefty would be screeching about how this game is sexist and proves gamers just want to hurt women.

Fair enough lol. I was just super annoyed that they dragged politics into this and decided to use thread to push their own agenda and wanted to be the contrarian.

But yeah, OP definitely has something mental going on. Glad nobody's given them any points. This thread really should be locked, it's got very little to do with the game itself and has the potential to devolve into an argumentative mess.

This definitely smells like satanic panic to me, especially since the main post recommends that you practice a religion. The complaint also feels unwarranted, considering the games ending. The good endings are very uplifting, and the bad and neutral endings are somewhat ambiguous, not strictly negative.

Let's set aside the unhinged nature of this part of your commentary - what would you do differently for people who have a mental illness?

Pray? Do or offer nothing at all?

I suffer from mental illness, and this game was therapeutic and uplifting for me.

This game is all about finding meaning - what are you on about? It explicitly, repeatedly, emphasizes that there's meaning behind every choice that's made, and urges players to consider those choices or reflect on them or both.

This is the very definition of an "examined life"...and you're all about stoicism, yeah? Examine how and why you were affected by this and control your reaction to it. Y'know, like a stoic.

Originally posted by GuifreBorrell:

Prescribing stoicism isn't going to make the sorts of people you're trying to identify better. Look into who the most prominent stoics have been and ask yourself if those are people whose means are accessible to today's-most-downtrodden.

You seem to have missed the point of the game for what seems to be the same spiritual shortcomings you're attributing to people who enjoy it.

Okay, I respect your opinion but if you haven't played the game, I don't think you can judge it just based on someone else's gameplay. You are the one choosing the paths.

Plus I don't think it's fair judging a game by its creators. We are all different. If there is someone making delicious cookies but that someone is a person you don't like, will it change the taste of cookies? Are they really bad? Ofcourse, if you don't want to support the chef, you won't buy the cookies but it won't change their objective taste.
